Martial Law and After:
Reflection of the 30th
Anniversary of the End of the
Martial Law in Taiwan Cinema

The film series was held by Taipei Economy and Cultural Center in New York and National Chengchi University. The film series also featured screening and panel discussions with curators about several Taiwanese films, which marked the 30th anniversary of lifting Martial Law and Taiwan’s march toward democracy.

Concept
In this project, I used black and white as a symbol of the suppression of the past under Martial Law, and the bold and bright red for unstrained and free-spirited post-Martial Law times. Meanwhile, I chose the film still from one of the movies filmed during Martial Law time. The sit elder stares thoughtfully into his view from the past as a metaphor to reveal the past and embrace an unknown future.
