"Free The Nipple" in English and Chinese
#FreeTheNipple in Chinese Characters
#FreeTheNipple is a movement about gender and body equality.
However, in Chinese, the characters "奶頭 (nipples) " are already referred to as nipples on female breast based on the component "女 (female)" in character "奶 (breast)." Thus, to challenge the gender and body inequality in this movement, I re-designed the characters "奶頭 (nipples), " transferring the meaning from "nipples on female breast" to "nipples on male breast."
With this project, I wanted to bring up the gender inequality issue that hidden in Chinese characters. #FreeTheNipples, not only by creating images but by re-designing the words we use every day.
Some creative ideas based on #FreeTheNipple
In this two-day creative concept project, I had to develop a visual design based on topic #FreeTheNipple.
Within one day, I've generated 50 ideas sketches related to the topic. On the second day, I choose one of them and made it into visual design work.
About #FreeTheNipple Movement
#FreeTheNipple is a top-freedom campaign created in 2012, highlighting the general convention of allowing men to appear topless in public or social media while considering it sexual or indecent for women to do the same. The campaign argues that it should be legally and culturally acceptable for women to bare their nipples in public and on social media.
Explaining the Chinese words and characters' meaning of "Nipple 奶頭"
One of the components of the character "奶 (breast)", is "女 (female)“, which made it related to "nipples on female breast."
Simply changing the component "女 (female)" in character "奶 (breast)", into "男 (male) "
The Outcome
The project's outcome is a creative concept and character design idea about changing the Chinese characters' components in #FreeTheNipple 解放奶頭, from "nipples on female breast" to "nipples on male breast." The design aims to bring the awareness of gender and body inequality in the words we use every day.
Through re-designing the words, free female nipples literally and radically.
